? Echinogorgia macrospiculata Thomson & Simpson, 1909 View in CoL
Echinogorgia macrospiculata Thomson & Simpson, 1909: 219 View in CoL ; Stiasny, 1940: 134.
Material: RMNH Coel. 6078, part of the colony described by Stiasny.
Remarks. RMNH Coel. 6078 does belong to Echinogorgia , but apparently the material was kept in formalin for some time as many sclerites are disintegrated. Already Stiasny doubted this material really belonged to Echinogorgia macrospiculata “Détermination un peu incertaine”. As with most species described by Thomson & Simpson, E. macrospiculata also needs redescription before one can identify material as belonging to this species.
The colony shape of RMNH Coel. 6078 is similar to that of RMNH Coel. 38770 from Farur Island, but the latter colonies are not red and have less conspicuous calyces. For the moment we consider Stiasny’s E. macrospiculata as a different species of Echinogorgia .
