Distribution. Xinjiang.

Diagnosis. Shell with 6.375–7.500 whorls. Height 8.5–11.1, diam. maj. 3.7–5.0. Parietal tooth present. Columella with one blunt tooth. Palatal ridge-like tooth indistinct, very obtuse. Epiphallus straight. Flagellum indistinct. Penial caecum absent. Penis distally with one V-shaped pilaster. A-2 near A-3 internally with a ring of papillae. A-3 opening into A-2 by a long needle–like papilla. Bursa copulatrix duct proximally straight. Diverticle present.

Re-description of shell. Elongate-ovate; apex not acuminate; dextral; thin-shelled; solid; semitranslucent; glossy; with 6.375–6.899–7.500 whorls. Whorls with fine spiral grooves; convex. Embryonic shell smooth; polished; with 1.500–1.711–1.875 whorls. Postnuclear whorls wrinkled. Suture simple. Last whorl almost straight in front; rounded at periphery. Shell 8.5–10.0–11.1 high; 3.7–4.4–5.0 in diam. maj. Height/diam. maj. ratio 2.05– 2.27–2.55. Aperture ear-shaped; vertical; its insertions separated; 3.1–3.7–4.3 high, 2.4–2.8–3.3 wide. Ratio of shell height to aperture height 2.37–2.67–2.93. Palatal margin rounded. Peristome slightly expanded; sharp. Parietal callus indistinct; with angular tubercle. Parietal tooth present. Palatal wall with an indistinct and obtuse, ridge-like tooth. Columellar margin reflexed; with one blunt tooth. Umbilicus narrowly open. Shell, including upper whorls, uniformly corneous-brown; aperture of the same colour.

Genitalia. Vas deferens long; of even thickness; entering epiphallus apically at some angle. Epiphallus moderately long; cylindrical and uniformly thick; straight. Epiphallic caecum apically blunt. Flagellum indistinct ( Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7 , arrow). Penis evenly thick; without penial caecum; with terminal entrance of epiphallus; thin-walled. Pilasters fused at epiphallic pore. With one V-shaped pilaster; without papilla developed by fused distal pilasters forming V-shaped structure. V-shaped pilaster with proximal free end approaching at penial retractor insertion. Penial verge absent. Penial appendix short; branched off from proximal portion of penis; divided into sections A- 1+A-2, A-3 and A-4+A-5. A-1 long; without verge toward penial chamber. A-1 and A-2 fused; internally with longitudinal pilasters. A-2 near A-3 internally with a ring of papillae. A-2 and A-3 not fused. A-3 opening into A-2 by needle–like long papilla. Boundary between A-4 and A-5 indistinct. A-5 short; straight. Free oviduct moderately long; subequal to vagina in length. Vagina moderately long; not swollen; straight. Bursa copulatrix duct moderately long; proximally straight. Bursa copulatrix well defined. Diverticle present; longer than reservoir; unexpanded. Bursa copulatrix and diverticle distinguishable; diverticle diverging from bursa duct closer to reservoir than to duct’s proximal end.

Measurement of genitalia. P: 4; Ep: 9.4; VD: 12.6; Va: 2.1; FO: 2.3; BCD: 6.7; BC: 1.7; D: 4.7; A-1+A-2: 3.6; A-3: 1.0; A-4+A-5: 7.6 (HBUMM-06460–specimen 1).

Remarks. Notably, the flagellum is indistinct or missing in all anatomically known enid species distributed in Xinjiang. In addition to P. re t ro d e n s, the species with this feature are Pupopsis yengiawat sp. nov. (see below) and Subzebrinus labiellus ( Martens, 1881) , which is widely distributed in SE Kasakhstan and neighbouring Xinjiang, China ( Schileyko 1998; Wu unpublished).
