Protearomyia greciana McAlpine View in CoL
Protearomyia greciana McAlpine. 1962 View in CoL : The evolution of the Lonchaeidae (Diptera): 94 ( Protearomyia View in CoL ). Type locality: Macedonia ( Greece). Lectotype ♂ USNMNH. Male terminalia: Figs. 16, 19 ( McAlpine 1983): Figs. 22–26 ( MacGowan 2014). Male abdomen: Fig. 8 ( McAlpine 1983) Female aculeus: Figs. 38 & 39 ( McAlpine 1983).
Distribution: C zech Republic (southern Moravia), Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Greece, Poland, Spain, Turkey.
Remarks: P. greciana is most common in Mediterranean areas and less so further north, although recently the species has been recorded several times in the Germany states of Bavaria, Hesse and Saxony, (unpublished data). Habitat preferences are not clearly understood but McAlpine (1983) mentions that the type material was captured in an oak forest in Greece. MacGowan & Freidberg (2008) also list a specimen as being captured on oak and at altitudes of up to 1100 m in Israel. Most of the German specimens were found in dry pine-beech forests or more moist areas with many poplar trees, but there are also records from dry grasslands. Localities in Czech Republic include forest-steppe with oak forest; forest-steppe; damp meadow and edge of lowland wood near a pond ( Máca et al. 2005). Adults have been recorded between April and June.
