Genus Protearomyia McAlpine.

Remarks: The genus Protearomyia was erected and the species P. greciana described in J. F. McAlpine’s PhD thesis ( McAlpine 1962). In normal circumstances this would not meet the criteria of the I.C.Z.N. code for publication of a genus or species name. However, McAlpine (1983: 885 footnote) justified the validity of these names by using the criteria set out by Nicholson (1980) stating that “multiple identical copies of this particular thesis have been printed and distributed since the original edition was deposited in 1962. Its availability as a demand publication was published in Dissertation Abstracts the same year. It has subsequently been used and cited as a scientific reference by many workers, and is accepted here as being effectively published ” thereby relegating Priscoearomyia Morge, 1963 to the status of junior synonym.
