Fig. 32
Elytrurus caudatus Pascoe, 1870a: 471 View in CoL , pl. 18: 5. — Marshall, 1938: 75, 89, fig. 13 (syn. Dentipennis). — Paulian 1945: 196, fig. 61. Elytrurus dentipennis Fairmaire, 1879: 46, 1880: 209 View in CoL .
Elytrurus erromangoi Paulian, 1945: 196 View in CoL , figs 61, 62 (as ssp.) n. syn.
DESCRIPTION. — Scaling grey, dull green or coppery of variable density; scales large and round, or small and piliform. Rostrum with or without median carina, with or without sublateral carinae, dorsally flat or impressed. Elytra with or without distinct granules; apical processes in male long, contiguous or diverging, and turned up at tip; in female passing apical margin of elytra by a length or more of claw segment. 9.0- 15.5 mm.
TYPE MATERIAL. — 1) E. caudatus : holotype male, 13.5 x 4.9 mm, ‘ Fiji [in error], Elytrurus caudatus Pasc. , type, Pascoe Coll.’, NHML. 2) E. dentipennis : not present. 3) E. erromangoi : not present. Identified non-type specimens with BPBM, NHML, NZAC.
MATERIAL EXAMINED. — Vanuatu. Erromango , Tanna, Aneityum. 88 specimens .
ETYMOLOGY. — The specific name ‘caudátus’ refers to the extended elytra.
REMARKS. — E. caudatus is closely related to E. alatus from Futuna I., so much so that females, especially those from Erromango, are extraordinarily similar to Futuna females. Pascoe described the species from Fiji, in error according to Marshall (1938), who reported it only from Tanna Island.
