Ailuroedus melanotis guttaticollis Stresemann, 1922 View in CoL

Stresemann, E. (1922): Neue Formen aus Neuguinea. Ornithologische Monatsberichte 30(2): 35 [35].

Now Ailuroedus melanotis guttaticollis Stresemann, 1922 View in CoL . See Frith and Frith 2004: 237. In Mayr 1962a: 174 as Ailuroedus crassirostris guttaticollis View in CoL , followed by Dickinson 2003: 427. Gilliard 1969: 266 pointed out why he considered A. melanotis View in CoL and A. crassirostris View in CoL to be separate species.

HOLOTYPE: ZMB 49.295 View Materials . Male. Loc.: Hunsteinspitze [Mt. Hunstein, middle reaches of the Sepik River, Papua New Guinea, 4°31' S, 142°40' E]. Date: 9 March 1913. Coll.: Bürgers No. 1436. Iris: reddish brown. Bill: greyish green. Feet: grey. [Skin; data on field and ZMB label]. GoogleMaps

PARATYPE: ZMB 2002.501 View Materials [new registration]. Male. Loc.: Hunsteinspitze, Sepikrange. Date: 26 February 1913. Coll.: Bürgers No. 1321. Iris: yellowish brown. Bill: whitish grey. Feet: grey. [Skin; data on field and ZMB label] .

COMMENTS: Dr. Joseph Bürgers (1881–1954) participated as medical doctor and zoologist on the German SepikExpedition 1912–1913 ( Gebhardt 1964: 56–57). A second male paratype, once at Berlin, was probably donated to the Zoological Museum Tring, and is now AMNH 679721 About AMNH (Bürger's No. 1360, male, 1 March 1913, Huntsteinspitze) . Most of Bürgers' specimens were not properly registered on arrival. It was only when Meise worked on the types of Berlin Museum that some of the types got formal registration. Frith and Frith (2004: 237) erred in citing the handwritten registration number of the holotype as ZMB 22.295 View Materials instead of ZMB 49.295 View Materials .
