Preserved specimens range from pale to reddish or rose (stained with Rose Bengal to facilitate sorting of samples), body conical in shape ( Figs 10A–B View FIGURE 10 ; 11A–B, E–F View FIGURE 11 ; 12A–B View FIGURE 12 ). Body length 2.1–26.0 mm including paleae and scaphe, width 0.4–5.5 mm at cephalic region.
Cephalic veil circular-arched, connected to opercular lateral margin at base of 1 st pair of tentacular cirri, with 5–28 smooth cirri on anterior margin ( Figs 10C–D View FIGURE 10 ; 11G View FIGURE 11 ; 12C, E View FIGURE 12 ; 13A–C View FIGURE 13 ; 15B View FIGURE 15 ). Pair of lateral ear-shaped lobes adjacent to both sides of dorsal base of cephalic veil ( Figs 13A–B, D View FIGURE 13 ; 15D View FIGURE 15 ). Long buccal tentacles with wide longitudinal grooves, extending to margin of cephalic veil, arising posterior to cephalic veil ( Figs 10C–D View FIGURE 10 ; 12B–E View FIGURE 12 ; 13A–B View FIGURE 13 ; 15B, E View FIGURE 15 ).
Operculum semicircular; dorsal and lateral margins well developed, smooth; ventral margin (opercular ridge) with 9–15 pairs of golden paleae, curved dorsally, acute with extended tips ( Figs 10A–B View FIGURE 10 ; 12 A–D View FIGURE 12 ). Some specimens with small lappet in between rows of paleae ( Figs 12F View FIGURE 12 ; 15C View FIGURE 15 ).
First pair of tentacular cirri extending beyond tips of paleae, with annuli, arising from connection of opercular margin and paleal ridge ( Figs 10B–D View FIGURE 10 ; 12C–E View FIGURE 12 ; 13A–B View FIGURE 13 ; 15B View FIGURE 15 ). Pair of small ventral lappets present posterior to 1 st pair of tentacular cirri adjacent to ear-shaped lobes ( Figs 10D View FIGURE 10 ; 13A–B, D View FIGURE 13 ; 15B, D View FIGURE 15 ).
Second pair of tentacular cirri extending beyond opercular margin, with annuli, on latero-median connecting ridge on segment 2, inserted more dorsally than 1 st pair ( Figs 10C View FIGURE 10 ; 12D View FIGURE 12 ). Segment 2 with ventral lobes as pair of ventro-lateral lobes and narrow mid-ventral lobe about 1/2 width of ventro-lateral lobes; ventro-lateral lobes with several continuous lappets, and separated by shallow grooves from base of 2 nd pair of tentacular cirri; mid-ventral lobe inserted more posteriorly than ventro-lateral lobes, covered by ventral lobe of segment 3 ( Figs 10D View FIGURE 10 ; 13B View FIGURE 13 ; 15B View FIGURE 15 ). Segment 2 without dorsal lobe ( Figs 10D View FIGURE 10 ; 11A, E View FIGURE 11 ; 12D View FIGURE 12 ).
Comb-like branchiae on segments 3–4, consisting of series of dense, flat lamellae ( Figs 14A–B View FIGURE 14 ; 15B–C View FIGURE 15 ; 16A– B View FIGURE 16 ). Branchiae on segment 3 larger and inserted more ventrally than those on segment 4. Pair of small dorso-lateral glandular pads present adjacent to branchiae on segments 3–4 ( Figs 10C, E View FIGURE 10 ; 11A, E View FIGURE 11 ; 12D View FIGURE 12 ). Dorso-lateral glandular pads broader on segment 3 than those on segment 4.
Distinct ventral glandular lobes present on segments 3–6, becoming progressively more lateral and broader on segments 3–5 ( Figs 10A, D View FIGURE 10 ; 11B View FIGURE 11 ; 12C View FIGURE 12 ). Pair of lateral humps present near branchiae on segment 4 ( Figs 12D View FIGURE 12 , 14D View FIGURE 14 , 15A–B View FIGURE 15 ). Segment 3 with pair of ventro-lateral lobes and a mid-ventral lobe, separated by broad and deep grooves; mid-ventral lobe almost same width as ventro-lateral lobes; ventral lobes curved anteriorly at mid-line. Segment 4 with pair of ventro-lateral lobes and mid-ventral lobe about 1/2 width of ventro-lateral lobes, separated by narrow and deep grooves. Segment 5 with pair of ventro-lateral lobes and mid-ventral lobe about 1/4 width of lateral lobes, separated by shallow grooves. Segment 6 with pair of broad ventro-lateral lobes and mid-ventral lobe about 1/2 width of ventro-lateral lobes, separated by shallow grooves ( Figs 10A, D View FIGURE 10 ; 11B View FIGURE 11 ).

Anal flap oblong tongue-like, with crenulated latero-posterior and posterior margin, with longer lappets (cirri) on posterior margin, with short anal cirrus on median of dorsum of anal flap ( Figs 10G–H View FIGURE 10 ; 11C–D, H View FIGURE 11 ; 12J View FIGURE 12 ; 15G View FIGURE 15 ). Scaphal hooks 2–4 pairs, amber, hooked, curved dorsally, with pointed tips, arranged in two oblique rows on dorsal margin of scaphe ( Figs 10G View FIGURE 10 ; 11C–D, H View FIGURE 11 ; 12H–K View FIGURE 12 ; 13E–F View FIGURE 13 ).
Tube not collected.
Methyl Green stained body distinctly green on cirri of cephalic veil, rims of operculum, ventral lobes of segments 2–6, base of 2 nd pair of tentacular cirri, dorso-lateral pads of segments 3–4, lateral lobes on segments 20–21, and ventro-lateral or ventral regions on scaphe, dorsum of anal flap ( Figs 10–11 View FIGURE 10 View FIGURE 11 ).
Distribution. Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea, southern East China Sea and northern East China Sea ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 ), Japan.
Habitat. Found in mud or muddy sands from 5.0 m to 80.5 m depth.
Remarks. These specimens can be identified as Lagis bocki by the following characters: cephalic veil connect- ed to 1 st pair of tentacular cirri; opercular margins smooth; branchiae present on segments 3–4; capillary notochaetae on segments 5–19; neurochaetae (uncini) on segments 8–19; 4–6 longitudinal rows of major teeth on uncinus; scaphal flap with crenulated latero-posterior and posterior margin, and longer lappets (cirri) on posterior margin; anal cirrus present, and relatively few pairs of scaphal hooks (2–4 pairs). The number of paleae, cirri on opercular rim, cirri on cephalic veil, and scaphal hooks of L. bocki from the coastal waters of China all increase with the size of body, with significant positive correlations ( Fig. 16 View FIGURE 16 ). Numbers of pairs of scaphal hooks vary from 2–4 depending on body size. It is questionable that the type species L. koreni described from Norway was also recorded in the coastal waters of China ( Yang & Sun 1988). We did not find any specimens of L. koreni amongst all the material collected from the coast of China, and this was confirmed by molecular studies ( Fig. 41 View FIGURE 41 ). Lagis bocki is very similar to L. koreni , but they can be distinguished by longer cirri on margin of anal flap of specimens of L. bocki . Another species L. neapolitana the type locality of which is in Gulf of Naples, Mediterranean has also been recorded from China waters ( Sun et al. 2008; Lin & Zheng 2012), L. bocki is easily distinguished from L. neapolitana by the anal flap which in L. bocki has a crenulated margin, whereas L. neapolitana has smooth margin on anal flap, with several lobes on posterior margin from specimens checked in Australian Museum and we suggest that this species does not occur in Chinese waters. Lagis bocki can be easily distinguished from L. crenulatus Sun & Qiu, 2012 which is characterized by the cephalic veil free from operculum, with no branchiae on segments 3–4 and capillary notochaetae on segments 8–20.
Genus Pectinaria Lamarck, 1818
Type species. Nereis cylindraria belgica Pallas, 1766 , designated by Hartman (1959)
Type locality. Bohuslan , Sweden
Diagnosis. Cephalic veil free from operculum, with numerous long cirri on rim. Dorsal and lateral margins of semicircular operculum smooth. Comb-like branchiae present on segments 3–4. Notopodia other than those of segment 1 which bear paleae, on segments 5–19, 20 or 21 (15–17 pairs), with capillary notochaetae. Neuropodia, 12–13 pairs, with transverse row of uncini, on segments 8–19 or 20. Uncinus with more than one longitudinal row of major teeth. Scaphe flattened dorsally, with anal flap and distinctly separate from posterior segments.
Remarks. Pectinaria can easily be distinguished from Lagis by having the cephalic veil free from the operculum, and from Amphictene by having smooth margins of operculum, and from Petta and Cistenides by having more than one longitudinal row of major teeth on uncinus. Though this genus is not supported by the result of phylogenic analysis ( Fig. 41 View FIGURE 41 ), but as there is limited molecular data for this genus, we are following previous systematic studies (Zhang & Hutching, 2019), and as more data becomes available the genus can be revised. The four species Lagis abranchiata , L. crenulatus , L. plurihamus and L. pseudokoreni are proposed to be transferred into Pectinaria based on the cephalic veil being free from the operculum. Four species Pectinaria aegyptia ( Savigny, 1822) , P. antipoda Schmarda, 1861 , P. conchilega Grube, 1878 and P. papillosa Caullery, 1944 were previously recorded in Chinese waters ( Sun et al. 2008; Lin & Zheng 2012), but were not collected during this Study ( Figs 17 View FIGURE 17 & 41 View FIGURE 41 ), and we suggest are misidentifications.
