Monophyly of Rhyncholacis View in CoL and placement of Macarenia

Sequences and matrices: —Our concatenated alignment included 2340 nucleotide bases. Five, four, and three sequences for rbcL, the trnL intron, and ITS were newly obtained for this study, respectively (Appendix 1). The proportion of gaps and undetermined characters in the concatenated alignment was 12.6%. The data matrix is available in the TreeBASE database (http://www.treebase.org; accession S22615).

Phylogenetic analyses: —The topology and BP values ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ) of the concatenated data set agreed with the Tippery et al. (2011) results in most regards and thus will not be discussed here. We will concentrate on the placement of the Rhyncholacis species and in particular, the placement of the four species added to the Tippery et al. (2011) data set: Macarenia clavigera , Rhyncholacis apiculata , R. hydrocichorium , and R. sp. nov. All Rhyncholacis species as well as Macarenia were placed in a moderately well-supported (73 BP) clade. Within this clade, Macarenia was weakly (<50 BP) placed as sister to Rhyncholacis jenmanii forma laciniata . These two taxa were then sister to a strongly supported (100 BP) clade containing the remaining four Rhyncholacis species. All branches in this clade were strongly supported (≥ 98 BP). Rhyncholacis applanata and R. hydrocichorium were successive sisters to a clade containing R. apiculata and R. sp. nov. The tree file is available in the TreeBASE database (http://www.treebase.org; accession S22615).
