Basionym :― Statice carpatha Rechinger View in CoL fil. (1936: 147). Type (lectotype, designated here):― GREECE. Dodecanese : Insula Karpathos (Scarpanto): In saxosis calc. litoreis ad Vrondi adversus Pigadia, 17 June 1935, K. H. & F. Rechinger 8241 (lectotype G!, isotypes B!, M!, W!, WU!) .

Description: —Plant perennial, glabrous, forming a sub-shrub 30–40 cm tall, with several ascending to erect stems and a robust tap-root. Caudices 2–12 cm long, branched, densely spirally leafy in the upper half. Leaves thick, coriaceous, grey-glaucous, 50–140 mm long and 1.0– 3.5 mm broad, linear-oblanceolate, apex acute to obtuse, verrucate to tuberculate with crateriform glands, with one central nerve, gradually tapering into the petiole. Stems slender, 10 –50 cm long, verrucate to tuberculate with crateriform glands, nearly straight, grey-glaucous, slightly flexuous, branching frequently begins upper the lower third. Inflorescence narrowly trullate in outline. Sterile branches absent or 1–3 per stem, 1.5–3.0 cm long, unbranched. Fertile branches 3–10 cm long, flexuous, directed obliquely upwards, forming branching angles of 20°–45°, normally unbranched. Spikes 30–150 mm long, straight to slightly flexuous, erect to directed obliquely upwards. Spikelets 7.4–8.2 mm long, composed of 1–2 (–3) flowers, very remotely arranged with 1–4 per 2 cm. Outer bract 1.9–2.5 mm long and 1.9–2.3 mm broad, triangular-ovate, obtuse; bract margin broadly membranous; central part slightly fleshy, sometimes only at the base, acuminate. Middle bract membranous, 2.1–2.6 mm long and 1.6–2.0 mm broad, oblong-elliptic, rounded. Inner bract 5.8–7.0 mm long and 3.2–4.0 mm broad, obovate-elliptic, rounded; bract margin broadly membranous; central part fleshy, 4.8–5.2 mm long and 2.1–2.6 mm broad, oblong to oblong-obovate, acuminate, forming a narrowly triangular tip, 1.0– 1.2 mm long, not reaching the upper margin. Calyx 5.0–6.0 mm long, exceeding the inner bract by 0.5–1.0 mm; calyx tube glabrous or very sparsely shortly hairy, with 5 ribs ending near the upper margin of lobes; calyx lobes fine, ca. 0.4 × 0.9 mm, triangular. Corolla lilac.

Chromosome number: —2n = 34 (Erben Li–1767, unpubl.)

Distribution: —Restricted to Karpathos, where it is very frequent ( Fig. 92B View FIGURE 92 ).

Habitat: —Calcareous and marly rocky coast.

Taxonomic remarks: — L. carpathum is very similar to L. sitiacum and L. monolithicum , but it differs from both by having nearly needle-like leaves and triangular calyx lobes.
