Abbreviated Description. Twigs with conspicuous pale lenticels, indumentum of simple hairs, leaflets mostly 7–9, opposite or subopposite, mostly 12–20 cm long, 3–6 cm broad, oblong, elliptic or oblanceolate, inflorescence usually clustered near shoot apex in axils of underdeveloped leaves, 8–25 cm long, a slender to broad pyramidal thyrse, petals free, 2–2.5 mm long, imbricate, filaments fused one quarter to one third of their length, anthers (9–)10(–11), nectary a thick fleshy annulus, ovary glabrous, 3(–4)-locular, locules 1-ovulate, fruit 1–2.3 cm long, 3-valved, usually ellipsoid, sericeous, tomentose or glabrous, seeds 1–3, completely surrounded by a fleshy arillode.
Distribution & Ecology. Northern South America from Venezuela, Trinidad and the Guianas to southern Brazilian Amazonia, and also in the Amazonian drainage of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. A tree of non-flooded evergreen rain forest usually below 500 m elevation but occasionally reaching 1200 m.
