Etymology. “ Rubripes ” is the combination of the Latin words ruber “reddish” and pedis “foot”. Rubripes is an adjective.

Type material: Holotype of Epicadus rubripes (designated by Mello-Leitão 1924): female, BRAZIL, Rio de Janeiro: Niterói , [-22.8844; -43.0944], C.F. de Mello-Leitão leg. ( MNRJ 911 View Materials ; examined).

Holotype of Epicadus palidus holotype (designated by Mello-Leitão, 1929): juvenile female, BRAZIL, São Paulo, [-23.5333; -46.6166], E. Borgmeier leg. ( MNHN 12646; examined).

Note. The type specimen of E. rubripes was found dry and in poor preservation conditions (see Silva-Moreira 2010 for details), perhaps due to its previous preservation as a pinned specimen. Upon study of the type of E. pallidus , which is a juvenile specimen, we concluded that E. pallidus is a junior subjective synonym of E. rubripes because both have the large, round-ended vertically oriented posterior median projection.

Diagnosis. The females of E. rubripes can be distinguished from its congeners by having a large, round-ended and vertically oriented posterior median projection vertically on the opithosoma ( Figs 7 View FIGURE 7 B, C). Male pedipalp: RTA short and wide at its basis, with both margins slightly folded ( Figs 10 View FIGURE 10 A, 10C, D; 15F, 15I). Tegulum discoid with tegular furrow at nine o’clock.

Description. Female (MCN 8962): Total length 10.90; prosoma width 4.50; opisthosoma width 4.50; prosoma height without MS 1.90; opisthosoma height without projections 2.80. Leg measurements: femur I 4.67; patella I 2.20; tibia I 2.83; metatarsus I 1.87. tarsus I 1.37; femur II 4.53; patella II 2.20; tibia II 2.70; metatarsus II 1.87; tarsus II 1.50; femur III 2.33; patella III 1.13; tibia III 1.53; metatarsus III 1.13; tarsus III 0.70; femur IV 3.00; patella IV 1.20; tibia IV 1.67; metatarsus IV 1.33; tarsus IV 0.80. Leg spination: tibia I 2-2 (variation: 1(left side)- 1(right side)-1(left side)-2); metatarsus I 2 -0-2-2ap; tibia II 0-2-2 (variation: 1(left side)-1(right side)-1(left side)- 2); metatarsus II 2-2 -2ap. Distribution. BRAZIL: Bahia , Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, São Paulo ( Fig. 19 View FIGURE 19 ).

N.B. In the original description Mello-Leitão (1929: 97) indicates “Sao Paulo” as the type locality of E. pallidus . However, in the same work in the section titled " Conspectus Thomisidarum” (p. 253) he mentions this species as being from “Amazonas.” After checking the original type labels, where it is written "S.Paulo Borgmeier" we conclude that the correct type locality is São Paulo, and that the Amazonas information is probably a lapsus.

Natural history. A photograph shows a female of E. rubripes on a rolled leaf in a bed of silk ( Fig. 16 View FIGURE 16 F), suggesting an egg-sac guarding behavior. Other live images from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (P.N. Tijuca) show a female of E. rubripes on a spadix of a plant (apparently a Zantedeschia sp., commonly known as “calla lily”, a common Asteraceae widely used as ornamental plant) preying on a hymenopteran ( Fig. 16 View FIGURE 16 E). Its color as well as its large robust median abdominal projection seems to mimic the spadix of Zantedeschia , and may work as part of a sit-and-wait strategy to capture floral visitors.
