Type species: Tipula loti De Geer 1776: 420 (original designation).
Contarinia is a large, cosmopolitan genus in the tribe Cecidomyiini . The females have a long retractable ovipositor with closely appressed, dorsoventrally flattened cerci. Male flagellomeres are binodal, bearing a whorl of looped circumfila on each node. Larvae have three pairs of setose and one pair of stub-like papillae on their terminal segment.
