Notes. One male of this species was illustrated by Grismado (2008: 347, figs 7A‒C) as a male of A. araucana . After the examination of this specimen and comparing it with others from the same region of occurence, we assumed that it represents a new species, similar to A. araucana in the habitus and leg macrosetae pattern, but with differences in the male and female genitalia. Grismado (2008: 353) stated that the vial labeled as “ longipes ” from “Pissis”, anteriorly recognized as one of the types of Dysdera longipes Nicolet, 1849 by Ramírez (1989) (MNHNP- AR 9069, anteriorly 4211), possess a female specimen that differs from the ones of the vial from Valdivia, with one male and two females (MNHNP-AR 9067, anteriorly 4133). Because of that, Grismado (2008: 353) designated the specimen from “Pissis” as a non-type Ariadna araucana , one of his new species. Here we identifiy this female specimen as Ariadna lalen n. sp., due to differences from A. araucana in the female genitalia.

Diagnosis. Ariadna lalen n. sp. is similar to A. araucana due to the presence of reduced mid-portion in the male palp, and females with leg formula II-I-IV-III and absence of the median membranous crack in the interpulmonary fold; males of Ariadna lalen n. sp. differ from those of A. araucana by the presence of a subrectangular bulb, less rounded than A. araucana , with mid-portion and embolus markedly bended and thickened ( Fig. 63A‒B View FIGURE 63 ); females of A. lalen n. sp. differ from A. araucana by the anterior receptaculum, flattened laterally, with the dorsal region incrassated and rounded ( Fig. 63C‒D View FIGURE 63 ).
Etymology. The specific name is a noun in apposition taken from the “Mapundungun”, the language spoken by the Mapuche people that live in Araucanía, and other regions of southern Chile and Argentina. It refers to the old legend of the Lalén Kuzé, la “Araña Vieja” (“ancient spider”), a mythological creature that appears to the Mapuche women in their dreams to teach the art of weaving.
