Genus Elaphromyia Bigot View in CoL
Elaphromyia Bigot, 1859: 314 View in CoL . Type species E. melas Bigot, 1859 View in CoL .
Four species of Elaphromyia View in CoL were known previously from India: E. yunnanesis Wang , E. pterocallaeformis (Bezzi) View in CoL , E. siva Frey View in CoL and E. juncta David, Hancock & Sachin. The genus is characterized by 2 pairs of postocellar setae arranged in an ‘x’ fashion, 3 pairs of frontal setae, dark greyish scutum with yellowish setulae, apical scutellar setae shorter than basals and dark wings longer than body length, parallel-sided with multiple narrow hyaline or diffuse yellow spots mostly in parallel lines. Number of hyaline indentations in cell r 1 often variable in females (figs 6A–B and cf. David et al. 2021 figs15 & 16). Abdominal tergites yellowish with a few circular black spots or entirely dark and glans of phallus bifid, patterned and with beaded, plumose whip-like subapical lobes (figs 7G–H).
Key to Indian species of Elaphromyia Bigot View in CoL
1. Wing with broad hyaline indentations on costal margin; cells bc & c mostly hyaline with faint black bands, cell m with 4 elongate marginal hyaline indentations rather than circular indentations.......................... E. yunnanensis Wang View in CoL
- Wing with narrow circular hyaline indentations on costal margin; cells bc & c mostly dark with faint hyaline indentations, cell m with 2–4 small circular marginal hyaline indentations....................................................... 2
2. Katepisternal seta stubby white and as long as anterior anepisternal seta, both sexes with 8–10 black spots on abdominal tergites, females with 2 large, circular black spots on tergite VI.......... .. E. oculomaculata Maneesh & Hancock , sp. nov.
- Katepisternal seta dark or yellow and shorter than anterior anepisternal seta, both sexes with 2–4 black spots on abdominal tergites, females without 2 large circular black spots on tergite VI............................................... 3
3. Wing with 5–6 hyaline indentations in cell r 1, abdomen with 2 pairs of faint black spots on last two tergites in both sexes................................................................................. E. pterocallaeformis (Bezzi) View in CoL
- Wing with 3–4 hyaline indentations in cell r 1, abdomen yellow without any spots in males and often with a pair of circular black spots on tergite VI in females............................................................................ 4
4. Cell m with 2 marginal circular hyaline indentations, yellow indentations on dark pattern mostly circular to oval and not interconnected............................................................................... E. siva Frey View in CoL
- Cell m with 3 marginal circular hyaline indentations, yellow indentations on dark pattern elongated and mostly interconnected............................................................ E. juncta David, Hancock & Sachin
