Distribution. Western Atlantic: USA (North Carolina, Florida), Bermuda, Gulf of Mexico, St. Thomas, St. Martin, Saba, St. Eustatius, Antigua, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Barbados, Curaçao, Brazil, Trinidade, and Martin Vaz ( Rathbun 1930; Rodrigues et al. 2016; Poupin 2018; Tavares & Mendonça 2022; present study).
Material examined. Barbados, Port St. Charles , St. Peter, subtidal, 13°15’51.81”N, 59°38’36.34”W, 4 Ô, 1 ♀ CW: 22.2, 26.1, 29.9, 31.7, 29.7 mm ( BLSZ 038 ). Idem, 1 Ô CW: 30.5 mm ( BLSZ 271 ) GoogleMaps .
Remarks. This is the first record of Portunus anceps for Barbados. Caught in crab traps placed on sandy bottom (~ 4m deep) on the west coast of Barbados. Poupin (2018: 208) referencing Rathbun (1921: 67) included Barbados in the distribution for this species. However, Rathbun 1921: 67) reported Portunus (Portunus) sulcatus (two juvenile males, USNM 58046, 76738), which were collected from tidal pools at Pelican Island and Bathsheba in Barbados. However, Portunus (Portunus) sulcatus is a synonym of Portunus ventralis (A. Milne-Edwards, 1879) not Portunus anceps ( de Saussure, 1857) . Portunus anceps can be identified by its four triangular and blunt teeth on the frontal margin, median pair smaller than lateral pair, which are more advanced than the outer and inner supraorbital teeth ( Rathbun 1930).
