6. Puccinia insignis Holway (1904: 392) .

Allodus insignis (Holw.) Orton (1916: 197) View in CoL .

Type:― MEXICO. Cuernavaca, 25 Sept 1896, on Ipomoea wolcottiana Rose, E.W.D. Holway s.n. Figure 2 I− J View FIGURE 2 (Holotype).

Spermogonia and aecia unknown. Uredinia ( Aecidium type) on adaxial side of leaves, scattered singly or in groups of 2–5 on large yellow spots, short cylindric, 0.2–0.3 mm in diameter; peridium colorless; peridial cells 29–35 × 20–25 μm, rhombic, the outer wall 3–5 μm thick, inconspicuously striate, inner wall 4–6 μm thick, coarsely verrucose; urediniospores catenulate, globoid, 24–29 × 21–26 μm, wall 1–1.5 μm thick, colorless, distinctly verrucose. Telia on the adaxial side of leaves, loosely grouped about the uredinia or arising from the uredinia, rarely confluent, 0.1–0.3 mm across, opening by an apical ostiole, pulvinate, compact, blackish-brown, ruptured epidermis conspicuous, teliospores 52–70 × 25–31 μm, ellipsoid or oblong, abruptly narrowed above, prolonged into a golden-brown beak 12–23 μm thick, rounded below; wall 3–3.5 μm thick laterally, dark chestnut-brown, indistinctly striate–verrucose; pedicel up to 85 μm long, stout, slightly tinted next to spore ( Arthur and Orton, 1921). Life cycle (?/?, IIcv, III).

Specimen examined (Holotype)— MEXICO. Morelos: Cuernavaca, on Ipomoea wolcottiana Rose , 25 Sep 1896, E.W.D. Holway 3526.

Distribution ― Puccinia insignis is known only from Mexico ( Holway 1904; Orton 1916; Arthur & Orton 1921; Farr & Rossman 2015).

Notes ― Orton (1916) states that the type material was collected on 25 Sep 1895, while Holway (1904) on 25 Sep 1896. Our examination of the type material corroborates with Holway (1904). Holway (1904) does not describe urediniospores and Orton (1916) states that no urediniospores were seen because of the lateness of collection. In microscopic preparations of type material, we found only peridium and teliospores, and the teliospores are slightly larger than found by Arthur & Orton (1921) but very close to that found by Holway (1904). Holway (1904) did not perform measurements of the walls of the teliospores, but those given by Orton (1916) are smaller than ours. Our measurements of teliospores were 72−80 × 30−33 μm and wall measurements were 4−4.5 μm.
