Eugenia oblongata O. Berg var. velutina O. Berg (1857: 302) . Type:— BRAZIL. São Paulo: Santos, Sellow s.n. (syntype B †; lectotype BR! ( BR0000005260737 ), designated here; isolectotypes BM!, K!, LE!, P!, W!).
Notes:—In describing Eugenia oblongata, Berg (1857) published two varieties, E. oblongata var. velutina and E. oblongata var. glabrata O. Berg (1857: 302) , without, however, citing which of them would be the type-variety. The holotypes of both varieties were kept in B and have been destroyed. We found isotypes of Eugenia oblongata var. velutina (which we choose here as the type-variety) in several herbaria and the specimen of BR has been designated here as the lectotype. We have not found isotypes of Eugenia oblongata var. glabrata , neither sheets that could be designated as neotypes of this variety in the visited herbaria. In addition, Berg (1857) has also presented a note after the description of the varieties where he recognizes that the sheets analyzed by him (in Berlin) were very incomplete and that those varieties could consist in different species. So, we opted to recognize Eugenia oblongata var. glabrata as being of uncertain position (Incertae sedis).
Photo of Eugenia oblongata can be observed in Staggemeier et al. (2011).
Distribution:— Eugenia oblongata is distributed in Atlantic Rainforest from Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais states to Paraná, in hillside forest.
