Thallus chestnut brown, decumbent to subpendent, irregularly dichotomously branched, pseudocyphellae oblong to fusiform, prominent, 0.5–1 mm long, grayish white to brown.

Type:— CHINA. Yunnan: Lijiang Co., Jiuhe village, Laojunshan Mt., 3860 m elev., 26°37’N, 99°43’E, on bark of Abies sp. , 22 May 2011, L. S. Wang & M. M. Liang 11-32052 ( KUN-L, Holotype!).

Morphology:— Thallus decumbent to subpendent, 5–10(15) cm long ( Fig. 2A View FIGURE 2 ); surface light brown, yellowish brown to chestnut brown, smooth and shiny; branching anisotomic-dichotomic, branches cylindrical, 0.3–0.6 mm in diam., branch angles obtuse near the base, becoming acute near the tips; lateral spinules rare or absent, 0.1–0.3 mm long; spinulose branches rare, concolorous with the thallus, 1–2 mm long; pseudocyphellae oblong to fusiform, grayish white, light brown or dark brown, prominent, 0.5–1 mm long ( Fig. 2B View FIGURE 2 ); soralia absent; isidia - like spinules absent; cortex 80–100 μm thick, single-layered, outer part brownish, inner part hyaline; medulla hyphae loosely arranged, not ornamented, 4–5 μm in diam.; apothecia lateral and sessile, exciple grayish white, eciliate, disc dark fawn brown to yellowish brown, concave when young, becoming flat to convex when mature, 0.2–2 mm in diam. ( Fig. 2C View FIGURE 2 ); asci clavate, 8-spored, ascospores broadly ellipsoid to subglobose, simple and hyaline, c. 4 × 5 μm, spore wall 0.5 μm thick; pycnidia not seen.

Secondary metabolites:— Medulla P+ orange red, K–, C–, KC–, CK–, containing fumarprotocetraric acid.

Substrate and ecology:— Usually on bark of Abies , Picea and Rhododendron , rarely on rock, at elevations between 2450–4300 m.

Distribution in China:— Jilin, Inner Mongolia, Shannxi, Sichuan, Xizang and Yunnan.

World distribution:— Only known from China.

Notes:— This species is characterized by decumbent to subpendent thallus, irregularly dichotomic branching, chestnut brown thallus color, grayish white to brownish, oblong and prominent pseudocyphellae and the presence of fumarprotocetraric acid. It may be confused with B. trichodes (Michx.) Brodo & D. Hawksw. , which also has prominent pseudocyphellae. However, the latter species is pendent, usually light brown in color and has roundish and small (less than 0.5 mm) pseudocyphellae.
