Taxonomy. Revised by Williams et al. (2012b). This species has been confused with B. lucorum View in CoL .
Material examined. 14 queens, 122 workers, 251 males (IAB).
Distribution in North China. Primarily in the Liupanshan mountains, the edge of the east Qinghai-Tibetan plateau and the Qinling mountains. Abundant at medium elevations of the Liupanshan nature reserve in southern Ningxia, and at medium elevations of the Liancheng nature reserve in Gansu. Common at medium elevations of the the Lianhuashan nature reserve, the Maijishan forest park and the Baishuijiang nature reserve, at medium to high elevations of the Zhagana nature reserve in Gansu, and at medium elevations of the Taibai nature reserve of Qinling mountains in southern Shaanxi. Rare at medium elevations of the Micangshan mountains in southernmost Shaanxi and at medium elevations of the Quwushan mountains in Ningxia. 49 localities ( Fig. 122 View FIGURES 122 – 123. 122 ) between 1303–4011 m (IAB).
Similar species in North China. This species is very similar in its yellow-banded colour pattern to B. lucorum and B. cryptarum (see the key; Figs 123 View FIGURES 122 – 123. 122 , 125 View FIGURES 124 – 125. 124 , 133 View FIGURES 132 – 133. 132 ).
Distribution in China. Sichuan, Yunnan, Xizang, Shaanxi, Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia (IAB).
Forage plants. ALLIACEAE : Allium senescens ; APIACEAE : Angelica sp.; ASTERACEAE : Anaphalis bicolor , Aster farreri , Carduus acanthoides , Cirsium japonicum , C. leo , C. monocephalum , Cosmos bipinnatus , Helianthus annuus , Ligularia przewalskii , Ligularia sp., Parasenecio roborowskii , Picris hieracioides , Saussurea leucoma , S. purpurascens , Saussurea sp., Stemmacantha uniflora ; BUDDLEJACEAE : Buddleja officinalis , B. myriantha ; CRASSULACEAE : Phedimus sp.; FABACEAE : Astragalus sp., Lathyrus pratensis , Oxytropis kansuensis , O.
