Stalolidia bulbata View in CoL , sp. nov.

( Plate 2G View PLATE 2 , Figs. 117–123 View FIGURES 117–123 )

Length. Male 8.70–9.40 mm., female unknown.

External morphology. Large, robust species. General color dark brown to dark yellow, black markings on crown, pronotum and mesonotum, two broad transverse, translucent bands on middle of forewings, veins marked with small tannish spots ( Plate 2G View PLATE 2 ); face dark yellow, clypeus with long black, lateral band on each side of median longitudinal carina and on lateral margins; clypellus with black basal band on each side of medial inflated ridged; lora black; gena black in basal half, irregular shaped, longitudinal black band under each eye. Head narrower than pronotum, anterior margin broadly rounded; crown broader than width of eyes, produced distally slightly less than ¼ entire median length, lateral margins nearly parallel, disk flat; eyes large, elongate ovoid; pronotum large, longer than median length of crown, surface bullated; mesonotum large, about twice as long as pronotum; forewings long, broad, 3 anteapical cells present, outer one closed; clypeus long, broad, lateral margins nearly parallel, median longitudinal carina very prominent; clypeus short, about 1/3 as long as clypeus, inflated medially from base to near apes, apex flared apically.

Male genitalia. Pygofer in lateral view large, triangulate, narrow transverse chitinized band subdorsally, long fused caudoventral process extending beyond apex of caudodorsal margin, setaceous apically ( Fig. 117 View FIGURES 117–123 ); right subgenital plate long, broad, setaceous apically ( Fig. 118 View FIGURES 117–123 ); style robust, about as long as aedeagus, bulbous apically with flange on lateral margin in dorsal view ( Figs. 119, 120 View FIGURES 117–123 ); aedeagus long, narrow, tubular, base of shaft abruptly curved laterally in ventral view, several long setae near middle, few setae subapically, long submedial seta with secondary seta on apex ( Figs. 121, 122 View FIGURES 117–123 ); connective broadly Y-shaped, arms robust, membrane absent, stem short, narrow ( Fig. 123 View FIGURES 117–123 ); dorsal connective long, plate-like in ventral view ( Fig. 122 View FIGURES 117–123 ).

Materal examined. Holotype male. PERU: Madre de Dios, Rio Tambopata Res. , 30 km. (Air) SW Pto. Maldonado, 290 m., 12º50’S – 60º20’W., 12-XI-1982, insect flight trap, R. C. Wilkerson ( NMNH) GoogleMaps . Paratypes. 13 males, same data as holotype, ( FSU, MLBM) GoogleMaps .

Etymology. The name is descriptive for the bulbous stylar apex.

Remarks. This species has no close relatives. The bulbous apex on the style ( Figs. 119, 120 View FIGURES 117–123 ) and the peculiar transverse, chitinized band on the pygofer ( Fig. 118 View FIGURES 117–123 ) are unusual and unprecedented for this genus. It is placed in Stalolidia provisionally with some reservations.
