Sonerila rotundifolia Beddome (1861:74)

Lectotype (designated here):— INDIA. South India , Anamallay hills, 5000 ft, s.d., R. H. Beddome s.n. ( K barcode K000867656 [image!]). Fig. 1 .

Nomenclatural notes:— Sonerila rotundifolia was described by Beddome (1861) as “leaf radical, long petioled………, glabrous” and provided two habit sketches, of a hairy and a glabrous plant, in his Icone (1874: t. 169). He cited the collection locality as “Anamallay hills, moist rocky places 4-5000 feet ”. Thorough search in various herbaria resulted in three specimens, one each at K (barcode K000867656!), BM (barcode BM000884959!) and CAL (barcode CAL0000015615!). The sheets at BM and K (barcodes K000867656, BM000884959) bear the annotation “ Sonerila rotundifolia, Beddome, Anamallay hills, 5000 ft ” in his own hand writing and the sheet at CAL (barcode CAL0000015615) has a label, “Beddome, 6/59, Sonerila n. sp., no.61, Anamallays”. Of the two habit sketches in the Icone (t. 169), the glabrous one is drawn from K000867656 and the hairy one from BM000884959. Since the plant is described as glabrous in the protologue, the sheet K000867656 having several glabrous specimens and with a drawing of a seed on the right bottom corner by the author is designated as the lectotype.
