Habit and habitat:—Usually gregarious on the soil of evergreen broad-leaved forests dominated by Fagaceae ( Lithocarpus dealbatus , Quercus fabri ), Roseaceae ( Docynia delavayi ), and Juglandaceae ( Juglans regia ) or mixed forests with P. sarmandii or P. yunnensis ; July to September.
Distribution:— China: Guizhou (Shuicheng prefecture) and Yunnan province (Kunming city, Lanping, Qiaojia, Shizong prefecture) at elevations ranging from 1900–2700 m ( He & Yang 2021, this study).
Material examined:— CHINA. Guizhou province: Shuicheng prefecture (水城县), Yushe National Forest Park (玉§国‡森林公园), on the ground in mixed broadleaf-conifer forests ( Pinus armandii or P. yunnensis ), 26°27.35'N, 104°46.67'E, elev. 2030 m, 12 August 2018, Hong-Yan Huang 093 (MHKMU Huang-093, GenBank Acc. No.: nrLSU = ON595774, ITS = ON595765); same location, on the ground in mixed broadleaf-conifer forests dominated by Ericaceae or Pinus armandii , 26°27.35'N, 104°46.67'E, elev. 2030 m, 12 August 2018, Man Mu 050 (MHKMU Mu- 050, GenBank Acc. No.: nrLSU = ON595772, ITS = ON595763). Yunnan province: Qiaojia prefecture (巧‡县), Yaoshan town (Ḟ山¢), on the ground in mixed broadleaf-conifer forests ( Pinus armandii ), 27°08.75'N, 103°0.27'E, elev. 2580 m, 9 August 2018, Hong-Yan Huang 078 (MHKMU Huang-078, GenBank Acc. No.: nrLSU = ON595773, ITS = ON595764); Shizong prefecture (师※县), Junzi shan (OiŦ山), on the ground in an evergreen broad-leafed forest dominated by Fagaceae ( Lithocarpus dealbatus , Quercus fabri ), Roseaceae ( Docynia delavayi ), and Juglandaceae ( Juglans regia ) or mixed forests with P. armandii , 24°38.78'N, 104°09.28'E, elev. 2290 m, 23 July 2018, Li-Ping Tang 3049 (MHKMU Tang-3049, GenBank Acc. No.: nrLSU = ON595775, ITS = ON595766).
Comments:— Spodocybe bispora is distinguished by its medium basidiomata (pileus 3−5 cm diam.), grey brown to light grey pileus; large and cylindrical basidiospores (7–8.5 × 3–4 μm, Q = 2–2.67, Q m = 2.28 ± 0.25 in this study; 7.5–10.5 × 3–4 μm, Q = 2.11–3, Q m = 2.56 ± 0.3 from He & Yang (2021)), usually 2-spored basidia, and gregarious on the soil of evergreen broad-leaved forests or mixed forests. Macroscopic features of S. bispora are similar to S. alpina ; the comparison between them can be found in the comments of S. alpina .
This species is originally described from Yunnan province. Furthermore, it is currently found in Guizhou province also.
