Distribution. Western Atlantic—USA (North Carolina to Florida), Gulf of Mexico, Cuba, Jamaica, Porto Rico, Costa Rica, Panamá, north of South America, Brazil (Fernando de Noronha, Abrolhos, Pará, Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul), Uruguay, and Argentina. Eastern Atlantic—Angola and Cape Verde, Mediterranean Sea ( Rathbun 1918; Melo 1996; Poupin et al. 2005; Alves et al. 2008; Spivak et al. 2019).

Remarks. Previous records in São Paulo state include Ubatuba ( Flores & Negreiros-Fransozo 1998; Alves et al. 2012b, 2013b), São Vicente ( Sant’Anna et al. 2012), Iguape ( Rathbun 1918), and Cananéia ( Tiseo et al. 2014, 2017). The distribution of P. transversus in the Eastern Pacific—USA (California) to Peru ( Melo 1996)—was discarded and the specimens from the Pacific coast were assigned to the resurrected species Pachygrapsus socius ( Schubart et al. 2005) .
