Distribution. Western Atlantic—Antilles, north of South America, Guianas, and Brazil (Amapá, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul) ( Rathbun 1918; Holthuis 1959; Coelho & Ramos 1972; Fausto-Filho & Sampaio Neto 1976; Melo 1996, 2008, 2010; Coelho et al. 2008; Boos et al. 2012; Ng & Castro 2016).

Remarks. Record on the coast of São Paulo state was first mentioned in a continuous distribution range without specific locality by Coelho & Ramos (1972), and in Ubatuba as larvae phase obtained in the plankton (G. Hirose, unpublished thesis). Nucci & Melo (2012) mentioned the occurrence but no information about voucher individuals was provided; pending double check about this situation. This is an important record of adult specimens in São Paulo. Specimens are found from 25 to 210m ( Melo et al. 1989; Melo 1996, 2010), and in the literature available the number of individuals captured is low.
