Distribution. Western Atlantic—USA (Rhode Island, Florida), Bermuda, Gulf of Mexico, Central America, Antilles, north of South America, Guianas, and Brazil (Fernando de Noronha, Pará, Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul) ( Rathbun 1918; Chace & Hobbs 1969; Williams 1984; Abele & Kim 1986; Melo 1996; Barros & Pimentel 2001; Alves et al. 2008).

Remarks. Previous record on the coast of São Paulo includes Matuba ( Rathbun 1918), probably a spelling mistake and the correct one is Ubatuba. Sequences accession number (GenBank): CCDB 3186—16S ( MT042114 ), COI ( MT623342 ) (present study).
