Distribution. Western Atlantic—USA (North Carolina) to Brazil (Fernando de Noronha; Maranhão, Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Bahia to Rio Grande do Sul) ( Melo 1996, 2010; Alves et al. 2008; Coelho et al. 2008; Felder et al. 2009 —all records as Microphrys bicornutus ).

Remarks. Previous records on the coast of São Paulo include Ubatuba ( Mantelatto & Fransozo 2000; Bertini & Fransozo 2004; Bertini et al. 2004, 2010; Alves et al. 2012b, 2013b; Assugeni et al. 2017) and Caraguatatuba ( Braga et al. 2005). This species previously belonged to the genus Microphrys H. Milne Edwards, 1851 and was assigned to the new valid genus Omalacantha Windsor & Felder, 2014 ( Windsor & Felder 2014). Sequences accession number (GenBank): CCDB 5740—16S ( MF490191 ), COI ( MF490097 ) ( Mantelatto et al. 2018a).
