Distribution:— India [Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Assam, Meghalaya], Myanmar, Thailand and Malesia; 0‒1300 m.

Notes:— Blume(1826) described the species based on material from Mt.Pantjar in Java using the name Calyptranthes aromatica (published as the orthographic variant ‘ Calyptranthus ’), which is illegitimate. The species was later named in Caryophyllus by Candolle using the new specific epithet antisepticus , since Caryophyllus aromatica Linnaeus , was already in existence. Miquel (1855) placed the species in Jambosa and used the original epithet aromatica , which is treated as a replacement name ( McNeill et al. 2012, Article 58.1). However, the epithet ‘aromaticum’ is unavailable in Syzygium so the correct name of the taxon in this genus is S. antisepticum . The sheet at NY is annotated by Blume as Calyptranthes aromatica and is here chosen as lectotype.A sheet at Utrecht [barcode U0258717], apparently annotated by Miquel as Jambosa aromatica , has two elements, including a fruiting specimen on upper part of sheet and a flowering specimen on lower part of sheet. The flowering specimen in our opinion is Blume’s collection and we consider this an isolectotype.

The delineation of species in the S. zeylanicum group is difficult and in need of thorough revision. The name S. antisepticum has been applied widely, perhaps not always in agreement with the type, so we stress that the synonymy given here merely follows recent literature from the region. Although we have followed Ashton (2011) in listing Syzygium ovatifolium Merrill & L.M.Perry (1939: 161) as a synonym, it should be noted that the authors of this name considered it closer to Syzygium zeylanicum (L.) De Candolle ( Candolle 1828: 260).
