(Figs. 12–14 of original publication)

Type specimens. Holotype ♂: Tam Dao National Park , Vinh Phuc Province, northern Vietnam, 22-V-2016, T. Kompier leg . Paratypes: 1 ♂ same date, location and collector, 1 ♂ Pia Oac Nature Reserve , Cao Bang Province, northern Vietnam, 3-VI-2016, T. Kompier leg. All deposited in Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Leiden , the Netherlands.

M ale holotype. 17 postnodal crossveins in forewing, 16 in hindwing.

Measurements (mm). ♂ Hind wing 23.5; abdomen including appendages 42.

Variation in paratypes. Male from Tam Dao with extensive dark markings on lateral lobes of prothorax and pale spot on metepisternum somewhat larger, covering almost half of posterior half. Right hindwing with 17 postnodal crossveins. Hindwing 25 mm, abdomen including appendages 45 mm. Male from Pia Oac with completely black prothorax, metepisternum with only minute paler spot, 21 postnodal crossveins in forewing and 19 in hindwing. Hindwing 25 mm, abdomen including appendages 46 mm.

Female. Not collected. Based on field observations thorax pattern as male and S9 dark.

Diagnosis. Van Tol (2008) provided thorough descriptions of both light and dark form of P. satoi . In their treatment of known Protosticta from Vietnam Phan & Kompier (2016) followed the original interpretation that these forms belonged to one species. But with increasing insight into the high diversity of the P. curiosa group of species in Vietnam a reassessment seemed necessary.

Although in lateral view differences between the appendages of the two forms seems minimal, close inspection in dorsolateral view does reveal consistent differences (Figs. 14,17 of original publication). In Table 1 View TABLE 1 the main differences between the cerci of P. satoi and P. nigra spec. nov. are summarized. Obviously the differences in patterning of the thorax are evident and do not warrant further elaboration.
