Etymology. Named chiarae /ˈkjɑʀe/ (L. noun genitive), after Chiara Raieli, who proved herself invaluable, both on the field as in the daily life, as partner, friend, and fieldwork assistant of HOS.
Description of holotype
Head. Chiefly black, labrum dark glossy blue, vertex with pale spots anterolateral to lateral ocelli at lateral edges, occiput with complete pale occipital bar, eyes dark brown to black; antennae scape pale on the half laterad and on the distal margin, pedicel and flagellum dark brown.
Thorax. Prothorax: chiefly black, anterior lobe pale; see Figs. 103 View FIGURES 95–104 , 109 View FIGURES 105–116 for morphology. Pterothorax: chiefly black with diffuse green metallic reflections over dark colouration on mesepisternum and mesepimeron; see Fig. 16 View FIGURES 12–19 for colour pattern; sternum pale; legs pale but femora black on distal joint and brown on extensor surfaces; tibiae brown on extensor surfaces; tarsi brown; claws reddish.
Wings. Black tip covering one-fifth of wing length, thus covering pterostigma; FW with one post-quadrangular cell, the vein that descends from the subnodus at the first Vx; HW field between CuA and posterior margin forked and with one supplementary vein, CuA in HW not forked, with one supplementary sector. Abdomen. Chiefly black. S2 with pale ventrolateral horizontal lines; S7 with pale basolateral spots.
Caudal appendages. Cerci: see Fig. 65 View FIGURES 62–66 for morphology. Paraprocts: superior lobe rudimentary, distinguished only by a transverse groove; inferior lobe in lateral view with an acute projection.
Measurements. Abdomen: 38, FW: 36.3, HW: 44.6.
Description of female. Female unknown.
Diagnosis. Paraphlebia chiarae is most similar to P. kukulkan , P. zoe , and P. akan and is diagnosed under the latter.
Natural history. Collected at a stream in remnants of mountain cloud forest.
Distribution. Southeast Mexico: it is only known from the type locality in SW Chiapas ca. 15 km north of Arriaga at 550 m. a.s.l.
