5. Othonna leptodactyla Harv. View in CoL in Fl. Cap. 3: 331 (1865). Type: South Africa, [Western Cape], ‘between Kromrivier, by Piquetberg and Bergvalei’ [‘ Zwischen Kromrivier (am Piquetberg ) und Bergvalei’], without date, Drege s.n. (K-000306971, holo. —image! ; P-0004764—image!, iso.) .

Shrubs to 1.5 m, stems woody, simple or sparsely branched in upper half, branches erect to sub-erect, striate, deep red when young becoming pale grey with age, leaf axils cobwebbed. Leaves alternate, mostly fasciculate on short-shoots (primary leaves soon deciduous), blade linear or narrowly lanceolate, narrowed below and petiole-like, 5 - 50 £ 2 - 10 mm, entire or sparsely to irregularly toothed or 3 - 5 pinnatifid, lobes linear, 5 - 15 £ 2 - 5 mm, leathery to sub-succulent. In fl orescence of mostly solitary capitula but often also in loose corymbs, terminal on stems or short-shoots; peduncles 20 - 80 mm long. Capitula radiate, rays yellow sometimes darker beneath, disc yellow. Involucre 8 - 15(20) mm diam., bracts 7 or 8, lanceolate, 8 - 12 £ 2 - 3 mm, connate in basal 1/3 to 1/2. Ray fl orets 7 or 8, corolla tube 4 - 6 mm long, limb lanceolate to elliptic, 7 - 15 £ 2 - 5 mm; ovary oblong to obovoid, appressed-puberulous with white twin-hairs; style branching at mouth of tube. Cypselae ellipsoid-ovoid, 3 - 8 £ 2 - 3 mm, densely appressed-puberulous on ribs with non-myxogenic, white, twin-hairs; pappus accrescent, 7 - 15 mm long, beige. Disc fl orets numerous, corolla tube 2 - 4 mm long, lobes lanceolate to ovate, 0.5 - 1.5 mm long; filaments 1 - 2 mm long; ovary 4 - 7 mm long; style simple and cone-tipped; pappus of § 10 barbellate bristles, united basally.

Distribution and Ecology: Othonna leptodactyla is relatively narrowly distributed along the western escarpment and adjacent mountain ranges of South Africa, from central Namaqualand in Northern Cape along the Bokkeveld Mts and Cederberg to Citrusdal extending west onto the coastal plain between Eland’ s Bay and Redelinghuys in the Western Cape (Fig. 7); on sandstone or granitic slopes, usually in open sandy situstions. Flowering is from August to September.

Diagnosis: Othonna leptodactyla is distinguished by the linear or narrowly lanceolate leaves with linear lobes 5 - 15 mm long ( Figs. 1B View Fig & 2B View Fig 1-B View Fig 2 View Fig ), and non-myxogenic cypselae. The species can be confused with O. coronopifolia but that species has obovate to oblanceolate leaves, often irregularly toothed or sometimes 3-pinnatifid with lanceolate to cordate lobes 3 - 10 mm long, and myxogenic cypselae. Both species co-occur north of Clanwilliam without any evidence of hybridization [Manning and Magoswana 3520 and 3521 (NBG)].
