Acromis venosa Erichson 1847 View in CoL
Figs. 6–7, 10–13, 21–22
Acromis venosa Erichson 1847:153 View in CoL [original description]: Boheman 1854:98 [synonym of S. venosa View in CoL ]; Blackwelder 1946:743 [checklist]; Borowiec 1996:122 [distribution]; Borowiec 1998:170 [distribution].
Selenis venosa (Erichson) Boheman 1854:98 [synonymy; description]; Boheman 1856:86 [catalog]; Chapuis 1875:401 [characters]; Spaeth 1914:52 [catalog]; Blackwelder 1946:743 [synonym of A. venosa ].
Diagnosis. This species can be recognized by the acuminate posterior apices (Fig. 10) of the elytra in both sexes. The spermatheca ( Fig. 21 View Figs ) shows subtle differences in the appendix margins and receptacle base from those in the other species. Specimens tend to be much darker than specimens of A. spinifex .
Body color ranges from dark brown to black, with a darker maculation lending a mottled appearance. Ventrally the mouthparts are brown to dark brown, and the posterior margin of the abdominal sterna tan to dark brown
Description. Adult. Male ( Fig. 12 View Fig ) length 11–12.4 mm, width 7.9–9.6 mm. Female length 8.8–12.4 mm, width 6.7–11.9 mm.
Head ( Fig. 13 View Figs ): Clypeus, shape hemispherical, slightly protuberant from genae. Thorax: prosternal collar welldefined, posterior grooves present; medial depression present; surface with fine irregular ridges, sparsely punctate; pronotal basal margin with midposterior angles; pronotal margin curved along window between pronotum and elytra. Elytra: humeral ridge extending from elytral margin, across humeral angle and tapered near discal margin; disc with ridge near elytral suture, behind scutellum. Male genitalia: no apparent variation. Female genitalia: no apparent variation. Spermatheca ( Fig. 21 View Figs ): appendix distal margin shallowly concave, proximal margin sinuous; receptacle base not developed, duct continuous with long axis of receptacle; duct, proximal section with approximately four coils.
Type Material. Holotype male. Deposited in Museum fur Naturkunde der Humboldt Universitat, Berlin, Germany. Type locality: Peru, Mont. Phil. ZMHUB catalog number 14216.
Distribution. Previously published localities include Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru ( Blackwelder 1946; Borowiec 1998). I examined specimens from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, and Peru.
Specimens Examined. Holotype, and 127 specimens with the following label data:

(1, MACN); Lunguipata (1, LBC) .
Variation. Color varies from dark to reddishblack. The underlying maculation is variable in extent and intensity. The extent of the crenulation along the margin of the humeral fold is variable.
Remarks. The type specimen has a ‘‘*’’ on Erichson’s original data label to distinguish it in the original series. The series was collected from the same
locality and share the same MNHUB catalog number, 14216. The original description reads: ‘‘ A. obscure aenea , elytris sanguineovenosis. —Long. 5– 51/2’’ ( Erichson 1847). This lacks details that could distinguish A. spinifex and A. venosa .
Eggs, larvae, pupae and natural history information are unknown.
