Remarks. Macrognathus aculeatus was previously considered widespread until Britz (2010) demonstrated it can be distinguished into 12 species. Specimens encountered in Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo are to be referred as M. tapirus ( Kottelat & Widjanarti, 2005) . Only specimens encountered in Java are to be identified as M. aculeatus .
