Hieracium olympicum Boissier (1844: 30) View in CoL .

Holotype:― TURKEY. In vallibus regionis alpinae inferioris Olympi Bithyni infra Kirkbounar, August 1842, E. Boissier (G-Boiss.!).

= Hieracium olympicum var. jankae Boissier (1875: 875) View in CoL , syn. nov.

Lectotype (designated here):― BULGARIA. Janka iter turcicum a. 1871. In aridis glareosis silvarum m. Dospat-Dagh prope Batak Thraciae occiduae, 25 August 1871, V. Janka ( WRSL).

= Hieracium pilosissimum Frivaldszky (1836: 436) View in CoL , nom. illeg., non Schrank (1789: 318).

Lectotype (designated here):― BULGARIA. Rumelia , [1835] [original label in Frivaldszky’s own handwriting] ( W 41164 ) ( Fig. 2) (isolectotype BP 615971 ).

Notes: ―The generic placement of Hieracium olympicum has presented problems; at first Fries (1847: 407) included it to ‘nobilissimae species Pilosellarum ’.

The specimen becoming the isolectotype (BP 615971) obviously belongs to the original material, despite the absence of a label in Frivaldszky’s own handwriting. The species description attached to this specimen was copied by József Sándor from the protologue of H. pilosissimum .

Hieracium olympicum var. jankae was described on the basis of specimens with 1–3 capitula, distributed in Janka’s Iter turcicum a. 1871. exsiccate series. The number of capitula is variable in the species and this variety does not merit taxonomic recognition. The plants with fewer capitula are often observed in overshadowed places. In his exsiccatae, Janka treated H. pilosissimum as conspecific with H. olympicum .

Other specimens examined:— BULGARIA. In saxosis montes Rhodopes centralis prope pagum Bellova, 6 August 1892, J. Wagner ( PRC, BRNM 8285/36 ex herb. J. Freyn).
