Syndicus (Semisyndicus) grossepunctatus Yin and Li , new species

Type material (2 ♂♂, 1 ♀). Holotype: CHINA: ♂, labeled ‘ China: Hainan Prov., Changjiang County [Ouθ], Bawangling N. R. [ª±Κ] [ca. 19°06′05″N, 109°10′35″E], 11-iv-2010, alt. 1000 m, YIN Z.W. leg.’. Paratypes: CHINA: 1 ♀, same locality as holotype, except ‘ 850-1000 m, ZHU Jian-Qing leg.’; 1 ♂, labeled ‘ China: Hainan, Ledong County [ffi÷θ], Jianfengling [*RΚ], Mingfenggu [d¼☺], 18°44′[42″]N, 108°50′[41″]E, alt. [ca.] 950 m, 29-IV-2012, PAN Y.H. & LI W.R. leg.’.

Diagnosis. This new species can be readily separated from all other Semisyndicus by its small body (BL 2.38–2.46 mm), the sparse and coarse punctation on pronotal disc, the unique structure of aedeagal endophallus, and shape of the spermatheca.

Description. Male. BL 2.38–2.46 mm; body ( Fig. 1 A) moderately convex, reddish brown, legs and palpi slightly lighter. Head broadest at large, finely-faceted and moderately convex eyes, HL 0.40–0.41 mm, HW 0.51–0.53 mm; tempora in strictly dorsal view slightly arcuate; vertex strongly transverse, regularly convex, with short posteromedian longitudinal wrinkle, confluent with small, flattened frons; antennal tubercles slightly prominent; clypeus not modified, with anterior margin slightly concave. Head dorsum glossy, sparsely and finely punctate; setae sparse, moderately long. Antennae ( Fig. 2 A) slightly thickened toward apices, AnL 1.11 mm, relative lengths of antennomeres: 1.0: 1.1: 1.4: 1.3: 1.3: 1.3: 1.2: 1.2: 1.2: 1.3: 1.1. Pronotum elongate with regularly convex, trapezoidal disc, broadest near anterior third; PL 0.67–0.68 mm, PWb 0.49–0.50 mm, PWm 0.57–0.58 mm; anterior margin convex; sides strongly narrowing posteriorly and strongly constricted behind middle; posterior collar short, separated from disc by transverse row of four small but deep dorsal pits, with oblique lateral groove. Disc coarsely punctate; setae thin, moderately dense and long. Elytra in lateral view slightly more convex than pronotum, broadest anterior to middle and strongly narrowing toward apices, distinctly flattened near suture in anterior third; EL 1.31–1.37 mm, EW 0.88–0.93 mm, EI 1.48; humeral calli distinct, protruding anteriorly; punctation finer than that on pronotum; setae about as dense as those on pronotum. Legs moderately long and slender; dorsal femoral groove broad, extending to 2/3 length of femoral clava; all tibiae nearly straight. Aedeagus ( Fig. 2 B–D) slender, AeL 0.46 mm; endophallus ( Fig. 2 E–F) with complicated system of strongly to weakly sclerotized structures; parameres ( Fig. 2 G) with row of tiny apical setae, only slightly exceed apex of median lobe.

Female. Externally indistinguishable from male. BL 2.38 mm, HL 0.39 mm, HW 0.52 mm, AnL 1.07 mm, relative lengths of antennomeres: 1.0: 1.1: 1.3: 1.3: 1.2: 1.2: 1.1: 1.2: 1.2: 1.2: 1.1. PL 0.68 mm, PWb 0.50 mm, PWm 0.58 mm; EL 1.31 mm, EW 0.90 mm, EI 1.46. Spermatheca ( Fig. 2 H–I) spherical, small, SpD 0.07 mm, with funnel-like structure located on same axis as insertion of accessory gland.

Comparative notes. The coarse punctation on the pronotum of S. grossepunctatus is shared with S. schuelkei from Yunnan, these two species can be clearly separated by a much smaller body, and more slender aedeagus in S. grossepunctatus , while S. schuelkei is distinctly larger (BL 2.93–2.99 mm), and has a stout aedeagus typical of members of the nominotypical subgenus.

Distribution. Southern China: Hainan.

Etymology. The specific epithet refers to the coarse punctation on the pronotum.
