Holocentropus McLachlan View in CoL
Holocentropus McLachlan, 1878: 401 View in CoL .
Type species: Philopotamus dubius Rambur, 1842 , original designation.
Phryganeolitha Germar, 1813: 17 (synonymized by Barnard 1982: 294, and the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (ZN(S) 1591) 1985). Type species: Phryganeolitha + vetusta Germar, monotypic.
Diagnosis: The spur formula is 3,4,4. The maxillary palps each have the 1st and 2nd segments subequal in length, and are much shorter than the 3rd segment; the3rd segment of each maxillary palp originates subapically on the lateral face of the 2nd segment. The discoidal cell on each forewing and hind wing is closed; the median cell on each forewing is closed, open in the hind wings. Forewings each have apical forks 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5; hind wings each have apical forks 2 and 5. The gonopods are mostly robust and broad.
In the original description of the genus, Holocentropus was placed near Polycentropus , but in each hind wing the discoidal cell is closed and only the apical forks 2 and 5 are present. The genus is represented in Baltic Amber by 22 species. Six extant species are distributed in the Palearctic Region, and 1 species was described from the Oriental Region ( Vietnam). This single Oriental species, H. vietnamellus Malicky , has a closed discoidal cell in each hind wing, the only primary generic wing venation character otherwise distinguishing it from Polyplectropus species.
