Key to the European species of the Empria candidata complex

1. Adult: habitus in females slender (Fig. 4b); head in dorsal view rectangular (Fig. 4d) as wide as mesosoma; mesoscutellar fovea sharply angled (Fig. 4e), mesoscutellum narrow (Fig. 4e); metasoma subcylindrical (Fig. 4b); mesepisternum with two pale, mostly separate, spots (Fig. 4g), anterior spot more or less obliterated, sometimes absent; clypeus in males with more or less extensive pale pattern (Fig.4 c.); penis valves strongly inflexed, the posterior valviceps projection large, triangular; the valvural lobe large and distinctly separated from the posterior valviceps projection (fig. 4f). Larva: black with obliterated pale pattern below the spiracular line, head amber yellow with extensive dark pattern (Fig.7)............................. E. candidata

- Adult: habitus in females stout (Fig. 5b), head in dorsal view distinctly transverse (Fig. 5d), narrower than mesosoma; the mesoscutellar fovea widely angled (Fig. 5e), mesoscutellum wide (Fig. 5e); metasoma subfusiform (Fig. 5b); mesepisternum with pale mostly triangular spot on the posterior margin (Fig. 5e); clypeus in males black, rarely with small pale spots at corners (Fig. 5c); penis valves slightly inflexed; the posterior valviceps projection small, lancetoid; the valvural lobe small and attached to the posterior valviceps projection (Fig. 5f). Larva: upper part of body (above spiracular line) dark, ventral part pale; head predominantly pale with reduced dark pattern..............................................................
