Sesleria korabensis var. mrkvickana Deyl (1946: 143) View in CoL
Lectotype (designated here):— MACEDONIA. [Nidže Mountain], Dobro polje, 28 May 1916, I. Mrkvička s.n. ( PR 161810 !). Figure 6 View FIGURE 6 . Other original material examined:— MACEDONIA. [Nidže Mountain], Dobro polje, May 1916, Mrkvička s.n. ( SOM 4507 !); Dobro polje, 22 May 1916, I. Mrkvička s.n. ( PR 161809 !).
Note:—This variety was considered by Deyl (1946) to have originated by crossing between S. korabensis and S. rigida , and was described on the basis of material collected by I. Mrkvička on Dobro polje (peak of Nidže Mountain) in Macedonia. The name honours the Bulgarian botanist Ivan Mrkvička, a committed helper of Josef Velenovský, who died during World War I in Macedonia in the same year he collected the type material ( Stanev 2004, Křivka & Holubec 2010). We found three herbarium specimens that belong to the original material, one specimen at SOM and two at PR. The specimen at SOM is dated from May 1916. The specimens from PR (161809, 161810) have exact dates; they were collected by Mrkvička on 22 nd and 28 th May 1916, respectively. The labels of all three specimens were most likely written later by Velenovský, as after the locality the paper that Velenovský published in honour of his friend Ivan Mrkvička is cited ( Velenovský 1922). According to the revision labels Deyl left on these three specimens, they are all part of the original material. Deyl’s label on the SOM specimen bears the name “ S. rigida var. mrkvičkana Acht. ” (an unpublished name)—this assignment to variety of the species S. rigida illustrates Deyl’s opinion regarding the hybrid origin of this taxon. On the specimens from PR, the name of the newly described variety is written, so we consider them as better candidates for the lectotype. Since the specimen PR 161810 is better preserved, we designate it here as lectotype.
