Lectotype (designated here): — BULGARIA. Blagoevgrad province: m. [mountain] Rilo [Rila], August 1889, J. Velenovský s.n. (PRC 451941!). Figure 7 View FIGURE 7 .

Note:—When Velenovský described S. phleoides var. orbelica , he cited two gatherings, the material collected by himself on Mt. Rila, where the plant was very abundant, and the material from Mt Vitoša, where it was rare and collected by Škorpil. In the herbarium collection in Charles University in Prague ( PRC) where Velenovský was working as a professor of botany, a specimen he collected in 1889 on Mt. Rila was found and determined as “ S. orbelica Velen ”. The specimen collected by Škorpil could not be traced. As the specimen PRC 451941 agrees with the protologue, we consider it to be part of the original material and designate it as the lectotype. The taxon was raised to specific level later by Hayek (1933: 237). Based on detailed study of the type material, we conclude that the species exhibits intermediate morphological characteristics between S. comosa and S. coerulans , an observation previously mentioned by Deyl (1946: 135). A possible hybrid origin for the taxon should be considered with molecular and cytogenetical analyses.
