Type:— BRASIL. Rio de Janeiro, 1817–1821, Schott 50 (lectotype designated by DeWolf (1965): B!).
Terrestrial trees, 10–22 m tall. Leaf blade 9.0– 15 cm long, 3.0– 6.5 cm wide, elliptic to obovate, sometimes lanceolate, apex obtuse, acute or acuminate, base cuneate, puberulent on both surfaces; secondary veins 11–27 pairs, basal lateral veins extending to 1/16 the length of the leaf blade; petiole 1.0–2.0 cm long, periderm flaking off; stipules caducous, 1.5–2.5 cm long, glabrous. Syconia solitary; peduncle 3.0– 13 mm long, glabrous; lateral bracts absent; receptacle 1.5–2.0 cm in diam. when dry, puberulent, apex rounded or concave ( Fig. 7B View FIGURE 7 ).
Distribution and habitat in Colombia: — Guaviare, in lowland rainforests at elevations of ca. 400 m ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 ).
