Type:— BRASIL. Acre: Rio Juruá Mirim , August 1901, E. Ule 5716 (lectotype designated by DeWolf (1965): B!; isolectotypes: CORD!, G! K-442909! K-442910! MG!) .
Terrestrial trees, 3–7 m tall. Leaf blade 12–20 cm long, 6.5–9.0 cm wide, obovate to elliptic, apex cuspidate, base cuneate, glabrous adaxially, glabrous, rarely hispid abaxially, secondary veins 8–12 pairs; petiole 1.0–4.0 cm long, glabrous, periderm flaking off; stipules caducous, 1.3–1.6 cm long, hispid. Syconia solitary; peduncle sessile or to 1.5 mm long, puberulent or hispid; lateral bracts absents; receptacle 1.2–2.0 cm in diam. when dry, hispid or puberulent, apex rounded ( Fig. 10C View FIGURE 10 ).
Distribution and habitat in Colombia: —Amazonas, Caquetá, Meta and Putumayo, in lowland to premontane rainforests at elevations of 100–800 m ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 ).

Phillipson 2194 (COL, US); P.N.N.Tinigua, Río Duda, Serrania Chamusa, Stevenson 2126 (NY).—Putumayo: Mocoa, Vereda de San Carlos, Cárdenas 11704 (COL); Río Caquetá, Puerto Limón, Schultes 18714 (GH, US).
Notes:— Ficus ulei was considered a synonym of F. maxima by DeWolf (1965) and Berg (2009), but the former species differs from the latter by the peduncle attachment (sessile- 1.5 mm vs. 4.0– 15 mm long), apex of the leaf blade (always cuspidate vs. acute or acuminate) and indumentum of basal bracts (glabrous vs. hispid).
