Type:— VENEZUELA. Río Yopo, s. d., W. Hamilton s. n. (lectotype designated by DeWolf (1965): P 756630!).
Terrestrial trees, 15–60 m tall. Leaf blade 7.0– 21.5 cm long, 3.0– 7.5 cm wide, elliptic to narrowly elliptic, base cuneate, apex acuminate, glabrous on both surfaces; secondary veins 20–33(–41) pairs; petiole 1.5–4.0 cm long, glabrous, periderm persistent; stipules caducous, 2.0–5.0 cm long, glabrous on both surfaces. Syconia solitary; peduncle 5.0–8.0 mm long, puberulent; lateral bracts absent; receptacle 0.9–1.2 cm in diam. when dry (in vivo to 2.5 cm), glabrous or puberulent, apex apiculate ( Fig. 10D View FIGURE 10 ).
Distribution and habitat in Colombia: — Antioquia, Boyaca, Caldas, Cesar, Chocó, Cundinamarca, Magdalena, Nariño, Quíndio, and Valle del Cauca, in lowland to premontane rainforests at elevations of 40–1500 m ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 ).
