As in the case of Lutzomyia cruciata View in CoL , Ps. shannoni View in CoL has been present in sites where human cutaneous leishmaniasis has been detected in Mexico, and Sánchez-García et al. (2010) found it naturally infected with Leishmania mexicana in Quintana Roo. Ibáñez-Bernal (2002) recorded this species in Veracruz, specifically from San Pedro Mezcalapa (Municipality of Minatitlán), Cosoleacaque (Municipality of Cosoleacaque), and from Nigromante (Municipality of Playa Vicente). Later, Ibáñez-Bernal et al. (2006) found this species in El Zapotal (Municipality of Colipa), and El Tacahuite (Municipality of Juchique de Ferrer). Additionally, Godinez-Alvarez and Ibáñez-Bernal (2010) reported it for El Limón and Emiliano Zapata (Municipality of Ixhuatlán del Sureste), El Zapotal (Municipality of Minatitlán) and Las Limas (Municipality of Cotaxtla).
