= Gymnopteris Bernh., J. Bot. (Schrader) 1799 (1): 297. 1799.

Hemionitis View in CoL is recognized by hairy blades with the sori running along the anastomosing veins. The delimitation of the genus reflects both morphological studies and isozymic data ( Ranker et al. 1989). Flavanoid pigments were surveyed by Gianassi & Mickel (1979).

Hemionitis View in CoL is monophyletic, as redefined by Mickel (1974), with five species, all neotropical. The genus is sister to Parahemionitis Panigrahi , the sole species P. arifolia (Burm.f.) Panigrahi View in CoL , from eastern Asia (Schuettpelz et al. 2007, Eiserhardt et al. 2011, Mazumdar 2015).
