Range: —Mesoamerica; Colombia to Trinidad, Guianas, and Bolivia (BE, LP, SC); Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil.
Ecology: —Common, terrestrial in open vegetation (savannas), semideciduous forests, on sandy soils; 150–750(– 1450) m.
Notes: —A distinctive species of savannas, and within the large group of Adiantum tetraphyllum , A. argutum , A. latifolium , and A. obliquum , with generally more ascending pinnae and more coriaceous, entire pinnules than allies.
Rhizomes very long-creeping and cord-like; rachises with two kinds of scales: lanceolate with pectinate bases and arachnoid; blades 2-pinnate, with 2–6 pairs of lateral pinnae; pinnules 2–3 times longer than wide, 10–15(–25) pairs per pinna, abaxially with lanceolate scales, adaxially glabrous, indusia bearing hairs less than 1 mm.
