Male genitalia: parameres ( Fig. 74 View FIGURES 72–78 ).
Note 1: Janson (1877) described Gymnetis goryi from Bolivia, which corresponds to the illustration of G. rufilateris not Illiger, given by Gory & Percheron (1833) ( Fig. 64 View FIGURES 64 ). As G. rufilateris sensu Gory & Percheron (1833) was recorded from Brazil, the distribution of G. goryi includes Brazil and Bolivia. While discussing G. goryi, Schürhoff (1937) mentioned that “the locality is not Brazil [error for Bolivia?] but Ecuador, instead, rufilateris G. & P. is from Brazil, and thus probably identical to rufilateris Ill. ” (translated from German). The mention of Ecuador by Schürhoff (1937), and repeated by Blackwelder (1944) and Krajčík (1998), may be erroneous and needs corroboration. Blackwelder (1944) also erroneously listed G. rufilateris Illiger from Bolivia and Argentina (Chaco). This was based on Bruch (1911a) (= Gymnetis goryi ). Gymnetis rufilateris Illiger urgently needs a redescription based on the type specimens.
Note 2: On page 67, Schürhoff (1937) listed G. goryi as a subspecies of Paragymnetis hieroglyphica ( Vigors, 1824) . The general aspect (Figs. 65–66) and the male parameres ( Fig. 74 View FIGURES 72–78 ) of G. goryi are completely different from those of G. hieroglyphica (Figs. 67–68 and 75 respectively). Therefore, the status of G. goryi as a separate species is re-established here.
Note 3: One black specimen with interrupted, red lateral bands on the elytra in MLPA was identified by B. Ratcliffe as being to G. goryi , and was identical to another specimen in the MACN (Fig. 66). It seems that some specimens tend to be melanic, with the orange and/or red lateral band on the elytra always interrupted by the dark maculation (black background color) ( Fig. 144 View FIGURES 143–146 ). In contrast, the light specimens, similar to that illustrated by Gory & Percheron (1833) ( Fig. 64 View FIGURES 64 ), may have the red lateral bands on elytra interrupted or not by the dark maculation.
