Figs. 43 View FIGURE 43 (distribution), 67 (type), 68 (aspect), 75 (parameres)
[ Gymnetis] Hieroglyphica Vigors, 1824 : 416 (description; distribution), Tab. 15, Fig. 5 View FIGURES 3–7 ;
Burmeister 1842: 298 (redescription; distribution); Blanchard 1850: 34 (catalog; distribution); Lucas 1857: 110 (distribution; reference); Dent 1886: 392 (list; distribution); Schenkling 1921: 94 (catalog; distribution; references); Krajcik 1998: 77 (catalog; distribution).
Gymnetis hieroglyphica (G.P. & Burm.) (sic!): Giachino 1982: 233 (catalog).
Paragymnetis hieroglyphica subsp. hieroglyphica Vg. : Schürhoff 1937: 67 (list; distribution).
Paragymnetis hieroglyphica Vig. : Blackwelder 1944: 263 (catalog).
Distribution: BOLIVIA: Santa Cruz: “Chiquitos” (Blanchard 1850), currently Santa Ana de Chiquitos. BRAZIL [type locality] (Vigors 1824, Lucas 1857, Schenkling 1921, Schürhoff 1937, Blackwelder 1944, Krajcik 1998); northern tropical Brazil, Col. Dupont (Burmeister 1842); Col. Spinola, 2 exx. [MRSN] (Giachino 1982); Minas Gerais (Dent 1886).
Material examined: BRAZIL: São Paulo: “São Paulo [printed] / Estado / 4.201 [handwritten]”, 1 ex. [ DIOC], “ Gymnetis / hieroglyph. Vig.” [handwritten, apparently by Moser] ; PARAGUAY: Canindeyú: Reserva Mbaracayú, Aguará-ñú , 13-XII-2003, Di Iorio leg., 1 male [ DIOC] (Fig. 68).
Male genitalia: parameres ( Fig. 75 View FIGURES 72–78 ).
Note 1: This species was identified in this work with the description and illustration of Vigors (1824) (Fig. 67). The species name is listed as published in 1825 (Schenkling 1921, Blackwelder 1944, Krajcik 1998), but fascicle III (pages 409–418) with its description (p. 416), was published in October 1824 (a fourth part dated January 1825 with the same title was published in fascicle IV, pages 526–542).
Note 2: The specimen above is a new record for Paraguay ( Fig. 43 View FIGURE 43 ). It seems to be a rare species that is seldom mentioned in the literature.
Note 3: Gymnetis hieroglyphica may be distinguished from orange specimens of G. pantherina with small spots of black background color ( Fig. 90 View FIGURES 79–104 ) by the shape of its male parameres ( Fig. 75 View FIGURES 72–78 ), and by the shiny black color of the venter and legs. The dorsal red color of G. hieroglyphica (Fig. 68) may be extended to the the lateral margins of the pygidium, to the venter of the body in the metaepimere, and to small spots on the lateral sides of the first four abdominal sternites, sometimes extended in a thin band bordering the posterior margins of the third, fourth and five abdominal sternites but not reaching the median line.
