Protohermes subnubilus Kimmins View in CoL

( Figs. 5 View FIGURES 1 – 5 , 31–36 View FIGURES 31 – 36 )

Protohermes subnubilus Kimmins, 1948:770 . Type locality: Myanmar (Ruby Mines).

Protohermes tengchongensis Yang & Yang, 1988:53 . Type locality: China (Yunnan: Tengchong). syn. nov.

Diagnosis. This species is characterized by the yellow body coloration, the head with one or two pairs of small black markings, the pronotum with two pairs of narrow and widely separated black markings ( Fig. 31 View FIGURES 31 – 36 ), and the male ninth sternum with trapezoidal posterior incision and a pair of digitiform posterolateral lobes ( Fig. 33 View FIGURES 31 – 36 ).

Description. See Liu & Yang (2005).

Type material. Holotype ♂, “Birmah [= Myanmar], Ruby Mines [probably a locality near Mogok, Mandalay, 22°55'N, 96°30'E]/McLachlan Coll[ection]. B[ritish].M[useum].1938-674/ Protohermes subnubilus Kim [mins] ♂ det. D.E. Kimmins. TYPE / Holotype ” (BMNH).

Other materials. CHINA: 1♂ (holotype of P. tengchongensis ), Yunnan, Tengchong [25°01′N, 98°30′E], 1800 m, 1.VI.1979 (BAUC); 1♀, Yunnan, Tengchong, Jietou, 1500 m, 17.V.2006, Xingyue Liu (BAUC); 3♂ 1♀, Yunnan, Tengchong, Jietou [25°25′N, 98°39′E], 1600 m, 1.VI.2007, Xingyue Liu (BAUC); 1♂, Yunnan, Yingjiang, Taiping, Longpen, Longpen-ershe [24°40′N, 97°46′E], 1719 m, 2–3.VI.2010, Weiwei Zhang (BAUC); 1♀, Yunnan, Longling, Hengshan, Quanyuannongjiale [24°23′N, 98°59′E], 1377 m, 2–3.VI.2010, Weiwei Zhang (BAUC); 1♀, Yunnan, Yingjiang, Tongbiguan, Jinzhuzhai, 24°36′N, 97°36′E, 4–5.VI.2008, Weiwei Zhang (BAUC).

Distribution. China (Yunnan); Myanmar (Mandalay).

Remarks. Liu & Yang (2005) considered this species is closely related to P. tengchongensis but can be separated from the latter species by the head with only one pair of black markings, the strongly curved male ninth gonostylus, and the male ectoproct with angularly curved apex. Based on the comparison of the holotypes of P. subnubilus and P. tengchongensis and the examination of additional specimens identified as these two species, we found the specific differences proposed by Liu & Yang (2005) too variable to recognize their taxon. Furthermore, the type localities of P. subnubilus and P. tengchongensis are in close proximity and all examined material are from an area of China-Myanmar boundary. We consider P. tengchongensis to be a junior subjective synonym of P. subnubilus .
