Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 C–D, 15A–I Table 3 View TABLE 3

Etymology. The epithet refers to the wide dorsal band on Abd. 4.

Material examined. Holotype, female in preparation, JAMAICA, Saint Ann Parish, Monte Diablo, 1,6 km. s. Schwallenburg, along highway, Berlese sample leaf mould, 13.v.1950, H. B. Mills, coll., acc. no. 49630, INHS 579,848; 2 paratypes in preparation, and 11 adults and juvenile paratypes in alcohol with same collection information as holotype. Saint Ann Parish, Cave Valley, on bromeliad, 14.V.1950, H. B. Mills coll., acc. no. 49634, INHS 579,845; 1 paratype, without antennae or legs, in alcohol. St. Ann Parrish, 8,0 km south of Browns Town, leaf mould, 14.V.1950, H.B. Mills, coll., INHS 560,362.

Description. Size up to 1.9 mm.

Color pattern. Pattern as in Figs. 4 View FIGURE 4 C–D. Background color in alcohol preserved specimens light brown; Ant. 2–4 blue, internatennal and postocular fields with scattered dark blue pigment; lateral margin of Th. 2–Abd. 2 and subcoxae on middle and hind legs blackish blue, tibiotarsi light blue, Abd. 4 with a characteristic transversal band and short paired, latero-posterior stripes.

Head. Antennae up to 2.6x head diagonal. Subapical sense organ with guard sensillum robust and apically acuminate, sensillar pit present but sensillum not seen. Sensilla of Ant. 3 sense organ normal rods. Eyes 6–8 ( Fig. 15 View FIGURE 15 B), eyes G and H reduced, seen only in largest individuals, eye valley with 4 ciliate chaetae. Head dorsally ( Fig. 15 View FIGURE 15 A) with 3 anterior (A0, A2, S3) and 2 posterior (Pa5, Pm3) macrochaetae. Pre-labral chaetae serrate rather than ciliate. Labral chaetae smooth. Denticles on distal margin of labrum relatively long and separated ( Fig. 15 View FIGURE 15 C). Labial triangle with M1M2rEL1L2A1–5; r stout and smooth all other posterior chaetae ciliate. Post-labial field with 6 chaetae between columns I and O.

Body. Body macrochaetae 70/0243+0+ 6. Mesothorax with 1 anterior (a5) and 6 posterior (p3 complex) macrochaetae ( Fig. 15 View FIGURE 15 F). Metathorax without macrochaetae. Abd. 1 chaeta a6 present. Abd. 3 S-microchaeta d2 inserted posterior to macrochaeta pm6 ( Fig. 15 View FIGURE 15 I). Abd. 4 ( Fig. 15 View FIGURE 15 H) pseudopore inserted in field posterior to bothriotrix T4; inner macrochaetae A3, A5, and B5 present; macrochaeta A3 anterior to T2; A5 closer to pseudopore than to macrochaeta B5; 6 lateral macrochaetae present. Posterior chaetae 12–13+12–13.

Legs. Trochanteral organ with 22 chaetae. Metathoracic claw complex as in Figs. 15 View FIGURE 15 D–E: tenent hair spatulate on all legs, 1.3X as long as unguiculus; claws with 4 inner teeth, one basal tooth slightly larger than other, proximal unpaired tooth prominent, as long as shortest basal tooth; inner teeth spread as 42%, 45%, 69%, 85%. Dorsal and lateral teeth ending on basal quarter of unguis. Unguiculus lanceolate, narrow ( Fig. 15 View FIGURE 15 E) or weakly truncate ( Fig. 15 View FIGURE 15 D).

Furcula. Dens with 2 rows of ciliate spines: inner row with 32–33 spines; outer row with 21 spines. Mucro with 4 teeth, basal teeth paired ( Fig. 15 View FIGURE 15 G); mucro square in shape, 1.8x as long as width of distal end of dens; females with mucro 0.77 x as long as inner margin of metathoracic unguis; male mucro 1.0x metathoracic unguis.

Remarks. Trogolaphysa balteata sp. nov. is unique among Neotropical species with 6–8 eyes in having 3 head macrochaetae in the particular combination A0, A2, S3, and a transversal band on Abd. 4. The color pattern of the new species is most similar to that of some individuals of T. geminata from Puerto Rico ( Mari Mutt 1987), but that species carries 4 dorsal head macrochaeta. Trogolaphysa giordanoae and T. sauron Soto-Adames, Jordana & Baquero, 2014 also have three dorsal head macrochaetae, but instead of S3 these species carry M2. In addition, T. giordanoae has three macrochaetae on Th. 3 (none in T. balteata sp. nov.) and 4 macrochaetae on Abd. 4 (3 in T. balteata sp. nov.), whereas T. sauron carries 3 macrochaetae on Th. 2 and the unguiculus is truncate (lanceolate in T. balteata sp. nov.). Table 3 View TABLE 3 lists diagnostic characters for species with 3 anterior head macrochaetae.
