Description. See Boltovskoy et al. (1980, p. 18, pl. 4, figs 1–4) and Hottinger et al. (1993, p. 91, pl. 110, figs 1–4; pl. 111, figs 1, 2).
Remarks. Bolivina variabilis Williamson 1858 has an elongate, tapering, slender biserial test with a reticulate, polygonal, pitted ornament that extends over the entire test. The ornament decreases in spacing and size from the aboral to oral end. The sutures are depressed, the final chambers are slightly inflated and the aperture is ovate with a simple toothplate that extends from a partial apertural rim ( Fig. 18 View FIGURE 18 :4–9).
Williamson (1858) did not designate a type locality from the British Isles for B. variabilis ( Ellis & Messina 1940) . Despite this, this species has an expansive global distribution ( Boston , Torquay , Arran , Skye , Fowey , Shetland, Brixham , Whitehaven , Exmouth , Plymouth Sound and Eddystone—Williamson 1858; Puerto Deseado— Boltovskoy et al. 1980; Gulf of Aqaba—Hottinger et al. 1993; Western Timor sea from 93–95 m and Timor trough from 1159 m— Loeblich & Tappan 1994; coastal lagoons, inlet channels and sheltered oceanic embayments from the southeastern coast of Australia—Yassini & Jones 1995; Ningaloo Reef—Parker, 2009; New Caledonia from 5– 40 m—Debenay 2012).
Distribution within study area. Bolivina variabilis was collected in low abundance (one to nine specimens per site) most commonly in One Tree Lagoon 1. This species was absent from Wistari Reef.
