28. Huanaca lechleri Kuntze (1898: 113)

Neotype (designated here):— CHILE. Prov. Valdivia, in arena basáltica fl. Río Negro , January, Lechler s.n. (herb. Hohenacker 493; MPU1274040 !).

Protologue:—“Diplaspis (err. Diploposis) Lechleri Phil. = Huanaca Lechleri OK. im Berliner botanischen Museum” (not found).

= Azorella trifoliolata Clos (1847 [1848]: 85).

Notes:—Kuntze describes Huanaca lechleri based on a specimen housed at B and annotated by Philippi as “Diplaspis Lechleri”, however, this specimen was not found, at B nor any duplicate at SGO. Mathias & Constance (1971) on their revision of Huanaca , exclude the name H. lechleri from this genus because they argue that the gatherings collected by Lechler in “arena basaltica flum. Rio Negro prope Osorno in prov. Valdivia” distributed by Hohenacker under the label H. acaulis or H. cavanillesii were the basis for the binomial H. lechleri , and correspond to Azorella trifoliolata . We have found one specimen that matches the indications by Mathias & Constance. However, there is no evidence to consider this specimen part of the original material used by Kuntze. However, it matches the protologue of H. lechleri in its morphological description. Therefore, as no original material was found, we designate this specimen as a neotype of Huanaca lechleri .
